Peter Zumthor: Precedent

Theory: Design which draws its inspiration from nature creates room for more adaptive, innovative and sustainable buildings with collaborative environments.

The intentions for my school are based on drawing inspiration from nature and the creation of an innovative and collaborative environment, which I think ties in well with Peter Zumthor's thermal baths.

1. Setting and energy source
The site of the thermal baths is in the mountains and is built semi-underground, cutting into the ground. The thermal baths are a natural resource, so rather than just taking its inspiration from nature, the thermal baths actually take their entire design intention and energy source from nature. It would be interesting to look at my theory more literally and play with different natural elements such as water or trees being at the centre of my design, for example water on the ground floor to act as a passive cooling/heating component, or a tree at the centre of the design around which the school is built.

2. Modular planning
The plan itself is incredibly boxy and modular, much like the 'Pixel Facade' already explored as a precedent. This makes for a dynamic environment where the flow between rooms becomes logical and simple. I think in the school design, this would result in an innovative and collaborative environment in accordance with my theory.
